SDFAS Mentees Participate in the Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo
On Saturday, June 5, 2010, local San Diego sculptors and members of the SDFAS Artist Mentor Program, Fred Briscoe, Rae Barney, and John Brockley, were challenged to create snow sculptures for the new Polar Bear Plunge exhibit at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The artists were given 90-minutes, a mound of snow, a shovel, and a collection of the polar bears' favorite toys and treats to create a snow sculpture inside the exhibit. Upon completion, the artists stepped out of the exhibit and the polar bears were brought back in. The winner was determined by the polar bears themselves: whichever sculpture was destroyed first was the winner. After some amusing antics that delighted the gathered crowd of visitors to the zoo, the polar bears destroyed Fred Briscoe's piece first before decimating the remaining two, thereby making Fred the winner.
