Sunday afternoon, September 28th, 2008 was a significant day for the San Diego Fine Art Society. Sixty to seventy-five landscape architects, interior designers, public art coordinators, volunteers and friends of the Gardens and members of the Collectors Club enjoyed enjoyed classical guitar, lovely wines from Temecula Valley's Leonesse Cellars, and a self-guided tour of the Gardens where 22 sculptures were on display.

"Dream so Others Can See"

I was asked recently to make a piece for an upcoming group show here in San Diego. The name of the show is Movers and Shakers and the idea behind it is to have regional artists paint portraits of some of the people nurturing the art scene here. The artists and subjects were paired up by the woman whose show it is and I was lucky enough not only to be asked to participate but to get the lovely April Game as my subject.

SDFAS and Quail Botanical Gardens collaborate on a sculpture exhibition and sale, through October

It has been an exciting couple of weeks at the Society. In addition to preparing for our Hearts on Fire Gala, we have been installing a fascinating and diverse group of outdoor sculpture throughout Quail Botanical Gardens that will be on display until the end of October. Many of the artists have participated in the Port's Urban Trees project, which has been so successful and inspiring. It was by taking a tour of the public art projects taking place around the city that I got to know a couple of the Urban Tree artists and to take a good look at the program and the artists involved with it. I must say that the Port's Urban Tree project is one of the most successful, inspiring and fun public art programs I have seen anywhere.

San Diego Fine Art Society and Family Health Centers

Dear friends and supporters of the San Diego Fine Art Society,

Sinclair Stratton, the popular watercolor painter whom we featured at Studio Michelengelo recently, suffers from a common but potentially dangerous medical condition that was going untreated because, like over 600,000 San Diegan's, Sinclair is uninsured. This Spring the people at Family Health Centers heard Sinclair's story and within hours she was speaking with the director of the clinic nearest her house. She found out that she qualified for a special program for people with her condition and in her situation, and without delay she got the medicine she needed and is doing fine.

Artist Sinclair Stratton Captures Magic of the Animal World

Fueled by a passion for color and her love for animals, San Diego based artist Sinclair Stratton paints spectacular, up close and personal portraits of furry creatures, domestic and wild. Her exquisite watercolor paintings are an electric, psychedelic dance of contrasts that reveal the soul and personality of the animals she portrays. Some are alive, some have left this world, and others run wild in Stratton’s dreams. Her brushstrokes transform an ordinary tabby cat into a larger than life fantasy feline with red, purple, and lemon yellow stripes.

Phantom Galleries – Empty Storefronts Turn into Art Displays

The San Diego Fine Art Society will soon be transforming empty storefront windows into Phantom Galleries filled with colorful art displays you can view as you walk by. The current popularity of Phantom Galleries can be credited to Brian Eder and Cherri Lakey of Two Fish Design in San Jose in 2000. The concept is simple and brilliant: "Commumity artists have come together to enliven street-level downtown windows and public spaces with colorful exhibits and installations viewable 24/7 from the sidewalk." Downtown revitalization committees in several cities have co-opted the idea, and San Diego will soon join the many cities that have renewed the magic in the daily journey downtown.

festival celebrates art of all kinds through partnerships with various
community groups representing both visual and performing arts. ArtWalk on the Bay features some of the familiar components and artists of the April event, and several exciting newcomers.
