We said our goodbyes to Summer Camp and await the First Day of School as we make our way to the early days of Back to School season! For the past three weeks, our camp goers have enjoyed the thrill of getting transported from their beautiful La Jolla Campus to meet some of their favorite sea creatures, take on superhero alter-egos, and end their time with a quick 3-day trip around the world.
Week 4: Ocean Odyssey
With the view of the ocean on the horizon, campers marched to the field, chalk in hand and drew their favorite sea creatures on the pavement using an array of colors. Murals of mermaids and octopuses covered the pavement as proud artists shared their inspiration behind the artwork.
Art projects with elementary students include making a mini aquarium featuring their favorite fish. Preschoolers let their creativity flow and used paint to mix different hues of blue to depict the different depths of the ocean. As the week progressed, campers cooled down during their most anticipated weekly activity: Water Day Fridays!
Week 5: Superheroes
Young superheroes swarm the school in an amazing display of bravery and nobility. Dressed in colorful costumes and elaborately decorated masks, camp counselors took on the challenge of deciphering our campers’ identities. Throughout the week students shared their favorite famous superheroes with each other and played superhero vs. villain on the playground. To shield themselves from the sun, students spent time indoors and made their own capes, masks, and discussed what makes everyday people our modern day heroes.
Week 6: Around the World
The last week of camp was spent quenching our wanderlust and exploring the many cultures in the world. Through virtual visits, young travelers got to see historical landmarks and landscapes of countries in far corners of the globe. Aside from virtual travel, young explorers also learned how to write their names with hieroglyphics in a fascinating lesson on languages of the ancient world. Our group of adventurers spent their last day obtaining their pilot’s license and headed home with a passport filled with stamps.
Summer camp activities bring children of various ages to create friendships that carry over during the school year. As goodbyes are exchanged, SDFAS students can enjoy the remainder of their summer until they say hello to the upcoming brand new school year.
